Epigenetics

Experience can switch genes on and off without changing them.

Two brothers, same parents, same house, same stubborn chin. One of them ends up with the family's heart trouble and the other never does. We say it is in the genes and then we say it is not, and both seem true at once. We were told the blueprint was fixed at birth, and yet a hard year at work, a good teacher, a famine two generations back all seem to leave a mark. What is being changed, if the code is not?

What Epigenetics means

Epigenetics is the layer of chemical switches sitting on top of our DNA that decides which genes are read and which stay silent, without altering the code itself. Picture a genome as a library rather than a blueprint: everyone in a family has the same books, and experience decides which ones get opened. That is the definition. Owning it changes how we hear "it runs in the family". We stop treating a gene as a sentence and start treating it as a possibility, one whose reading depends on the conditions around it. We stop asking whether nature or nurture won, because nurture is partly how nature gets read. Before, a fear-driven team looked like the wrong people. After, we ask what the same people would show in a safer room.

Not to be confused with

Epigenetics is not genetics. Genetics is the sequence we are born with. Epigenetics is which parts of it are switched on or off, and that can change with experience, which the sequence cannot.

Epigenetics examples: where it shows up

  • At work: the same person in a supportive team and in a frightened one shows different abilities, and neither is the real one.
  • At home: the stress a parent carries, and the calm they manage to keep, both reach a child's biology, not only their mood.
  • In the news: the grandchildren of a famine carry its marks, which is why "inherited" no longer means only "in the DNA".
