The Map Is Not the Territory
Every model leaves something out; the model is not the thing.
The forecast said clear, so we left the coat behind, and the rain did not consult the forecast. The dashboard shows the project on green while the team is quietly drowning. The CV was excellent and the hire was not. Each time we trusted a summary, and the thing summarised turned out to have other ideas. We cannot carry the whole world around, so we carry pictures of it. When does the picture stop being enough?
What The Map Is Not the Territory means
The map is not the territory is the principle that every model, label, number and word is a simplification of reality, and the thing it describes is always bigger than it. One sentence, and it sounds obvious. Owning it is a habit of remembering what we are holding. We start to ask, of any figure or category we rely on, what it had to leave out to be that neat. We stop arguing about the map when the argument is really about the ground. Before: the metric moves and we believe the thing has changed. After: we check the ground at the moments the missing part could matter, and keep the map for the rest. It is not distrust of models; it is knowing their edges.
The Map Is Not the Territory examples: where it shows up
- At work: the KPI that looks healthy while the customers leave, because the number measured what was easy, not what mattered.
- With money: the budget spreadsheet that balances beautifully and forgets the boiler, the wedding and the year we lost a job.
- In a relationship: the story we tell about who someone is, formed years ago, meeting the person they have since become.
