What Question Behind the Question means

The question behind the question is the habit of treating a request as a clue to a deeper goal rather than the goal itself, and finding the problem the request was chosen to solve. Named, it sounds like common sense. Owned, it changes the first minute of every ask. We start to hear a question as someone's proposed solution, reached with less information than we now hold, and we ask one thing before we answer: what is this for? We stop delivering exactly what was asked and being surprised it did not help. Before: build the button. After: find what the button was for, check it back with the asker, and often build something smaller that actually works.

Question Behind the Question examples: where it shows up

• At work: the feature that took a sprint to build and a minute to reveal it was a workaround for a report nobody could share.
• At home: the child who asks for a later bedtime and wants, it turns out, ten minutes of someone's attention.
• In our own careers: the question "how do I get promoted" that, asked twice, turns into "how do I stop dreading Mondays".
