Social Norms
Unwritten rules enforced by shame and belonging.
Everyone at the table thinks the meeting could have been an email. Nobody says so, and the next one gets booked. At the office people leave at six even though the contract says five, and the one person who leaves on time feels the glance. There is no rule written anywhere, no manager enforcing it, and often nobody who would defend it out loud. So what is it that we are all obeying?
What Social Norms means
Social norms are the unwritten rules of how we are expected to behave, kept in place not by law but by the approval and shame we hand each other. Unwritten rules enforced by shame and belonging. That is the definition. Owning it changes what we do about a rule we dislike. We start to separate what people privately think from what they believe everyone else expects, because the two often come apart. We stop waiting for the rule to be repealed, since there is no one to repeal it. Before, the queue, the dress code and the after-hours reply felt like facts about the place. After, we can see them as expectations held up by everyone's guess about everyone else, and we know where a guess can be tested.
Not to be confused with
Social norms are not values or laws. A value is what we believe is good. A law is what the state will punish. A norm is what the people around us expect, enforced by nothing more than a look, and it often beats both.
Social Norms examples: where it shows up
- At work: the handbook says five, the floor says six, and the floor wins, because the floor is the one watching.
- At home: the family rule nobody remembers agreeing to still gets enforced at every Sunday lunch.
- In the news: an online community fines nobody and arrests nobody, and its exile still works.
