Bayesian Thinking

Belief is a dial you turn with evidence, not a switch.

A test comes back positive. A friend says the new restaurant is terrible. One bad quarter lands and the plan looks doomed. Each time we feel our view lurch all the way over, as if one piece of news were the whole story. A day later it lurches back. We know that a single result should not carry everything, yet it does, every time. How much should one piece of evidence really move us?

What Bayesian Thinking means

Bayesian thinking is the practice of treating belief as a dial we turn with evidence rather than a switch we flip: each new fact moves us by how surprising it is against what we already knew. The idea fits in a sentence. Owning it changes the size of our reactions. We start to ask, before the news lands, how likely the thing was in the first place, and we let that starting point do half the work. We stop being flattened by one striking result and stop ignoring the slow pile of ordinary ones. Before: a positive test means we are ill, a bad review means the place is bad. After: each is a nudge, sized to what we knew, and we can say how far we moved and why.

Bayesian Thinking examples: where it shows up

  • At work: one loud complaint from a customer outweighs a hundred silent renewals, until we remember how many customers there are.
  • With money: the friend who tripled their savings on one stock is the one we hear from, and the odds that got them there never change.
  • In the news: a rare event on every front page feels common, and the question we skip is how often it actually happens.
